“Hence, a traveller should be a botanist, for in all views plants form the chief embellishment.”

“Enigiemand wat reis, moet 'n plantkundige wees. Omdat plante die oorheersende versiering van enige landskap is.”

CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN (1808–1882)

I am a German amateur botanist with a deep passion for the captivating succulents of South Africa.

My interest in plant life began at a young age and was further intensified during my studies when a work placement at a company near Johannesburg brought me to South Africa for the first time in 1982. Little did I know this experience would shape the rest of my life. I instantly fell in love with South Africa's stunning landscapes, which were then largely untouched by modern tourism, the warm hospitality of its people, the diverse and iconic wildlife, and most importantly, the unique and incredible (succulent) flora. South Africa enchanted me, becoming a lifelong passion.

Over the years, armed with my camera and accompanied by my wife, we have embarked on numerous expeditions throughout South Africa. Together, we have covered about 200,000 kilometres, exploring the diverse and intriguing habitats of "vetplante".

Since 2008, my focus has been on euphorbias. In 2014, I became the national representative of the International Euphorbia Society for Austria and Germany, and starting in 2024, I will also represent South Africa.

After retiring a few years ago, I now dedicate much of my time to South Africa. My wife and I spend four to five months each year in George, a charming town in the heart of the Garden Route. From there, I continue my research and study of succulent euphorbias, constantly deepening my knowledge and enthusiasm for these remarkable plants. In fact, I am interested in all native South African plants, including both succulents and non-succulents.
