I am requesting help with ID for this specimen after hitting a dead end in my Facebook ID forums, local field guides, and other resources.
Found at sea level in Mendocino county, California in a mixed conifer forest: mostly cypress and pine. It was very sturdy, had a rough, dry, orange-brown cap, creamy gills which did not appear to lactate when damaged, though that could have been due to age. The gills of older specimens had a blush color at areas of damage. The stipe was a similar but darker color than the cap and with lighter colored scaley texture. The fully developed specimens were large, approximately 7-10” in height, the cap approximately 5” diameter. Spore print unavailable. Due to the location no examples were collected for further investigation.
Found under oaks and some pines.
Didn’t have that distinctive maple smell though.
Perhaps Suillellus amygdalinus?
