I am a fan of beauty, nature, learning, and public lands. My professional life is about people and data but my passion is for small towns and nature. For safety and physical capacity reasons, nearly all of my nature observation is done from in or near my car. I am proof that you don't need a backpack filled with gear and the ability to wander deep into the wilderness to connect with nature. My cameras for the past decade or so have been various superzoom, prosumer models from first Canon and now Nikon.

I currently if in southeast Idaho and I have previously called a variety of places in the Southeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest home. My favorite kind of vacation is a road trip that takes me to visit new (and revisit favorite) National Wildlife Refuges, National Grasslands, State Wildlife Areas, and the occasional National Park.

To date here are some of my favorites public lands for getting close to and photographing nature (especially birds):

Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge (Idaho)
National Bison Range (Montana)
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (Utah)
Antelope State Park (Utah)
Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge (California and especially in the fall and early winter)
Tulelake National Wildlife Refuge (California)
Summer Lake Wildlife Area (Oregon)
Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area (Wisconsin)
Badlands National Park (South Dakota)
Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Dakota)
